Guam is the largest island in Micronesia and the southernmost of the Mariana Island chain to the south of Japan. It is home to a population of approximately 170,000 people that are a mixture of native Chamorros and those from the Philippines and other Asian and Pacific islands.

As football fans, we all have to accept that as well as the highs of victory, we will also have to suffer the lows of defeat. The thrill of winning is addictive and can often provide everlasting memories. A significant defeat hurts terribly and is hard to take but it comes with the package. Part of the excitement of following football is experiencing the full scale of emotions. The lows can also sometimes provide an opportunity to change or rebuild. It isn’t always apparent at the time but a defeat can sometimes be a good thing. You would never admit it though.

Watching Rasmus Hojlund score a brace for Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday, with both goals assisted by the equally rejuvinated Kevin De Bruyne, was a wonderful sight to see given the travails the young striker endured over the last few seasons.

On the 17th July 1994, 94,194 people packed the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, California to watch the World Cup final between Brazil and Italy. It was no classic by any means but as an occasion it was outstanding and still managed to create one of the most memorable moments in World Cup history when Italian poster boy Roberto Baggio, il divin codino, skied Italy’s final penalty to grant Brazil a record fourth victory.

Sam On Sport’s Book Club

Go To War (released in 2024) is Jon Spurling’s second book based on a decade of English football after 2023’s Get It On which was set in the world of sideburns and clashing colours that was the 1970s. As referenced in the title, this new book takes us on a decade further into the 1980s, a troubled decade for English football but also one with some exceptional highlights too.

No Scotland, No Party

Tuesday night was just incredible. Being a Scotland fan over the years has been hard. Many near misses, underperformances when it really mattered and a number of false dawns really take it out of you. But Tuesday was a night that proved that it really is worthwhile to continue hoping and having just a little bit of faith.
