In the ever-evolving world of AI, we often find ourselves comparing the predictability of computer programs with the unpredictability of large language models (LLMs). While computer programs offer deterministic outputs, LLMs present a unique challenge due to their reliance on vast and often unfiltered datasets. A prime example of this dichotomy is Google's recent Gemini model, which produced unexpected and undesirable results. Despite being one of the largest and most capable AI organizations, Google struggled to anticipate the model's output accurately.

I canceled my ChatGPT Plus subscription due to performance issues, cost-effectiveness, privacy concerns, lack of transparency in updates, and the availability of easy alternatives. While ChatGPT initially offered a unique chat interface, the service became slow and unresponsive during peak hours. Comparing costs, using the GPT-4 API was more economical than the Plus version. Privacy concerns arose from the training data used by LLMs, and the lack of transparency in updates was a drawback. Easy alternatives like Big-AGI and ChatbotUI provided similar functionalities, and SaaS products integrated AI features. Additionally, running open-source LLMs and building GPU machines were viable options. Also, I simply do not trust OpenAI with my data. We all know about Sam's firing drama that happened in November 2023. Very few details emerged after that event, and no one knows what really happened. Additionally, Ilya Sutskever, who, according to Elon Musk, has a better moral compass, has been missing in action since December 14th.
The Nostr Initiative: What Are We Running Towards?
The Nostr ecosystem stands at a crossroads faced by many emerging technologies. The initial inclination has been to use this powerful new tool to replicate existing social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, and Google. This approach has provided a proof of concept, demonstrating Nostr's capabilities. However, it has *NOT* significantly shifted users away from these entrenched giants. It's clear that simply recreating with new tools isn't enough to dislodge platforms that have developed extensive features, usability, and a robust moat around their services.

Apple allowed Current App to keep the zap button on posts
In June, Damus faced issues with Apple's review process due to the "zap" feature on posts. Apple's App Review Support (AARS) stated that any feature offering value should implement In-App Purchases (IAP) per their guidelines. Although the "zap" feature was merely for user engagement, Apple insisted on IAP for compliance. An understanding was reached to make IAP optional. The final solution allowed users to purchase SATS via a $0.99 IAP or transfer SATS from other wallets, retaining the zap feature's simplicity. This approach abides by Apple's rules and aids in introducing users to Nostr, Bitcoin, and Lightning. This write up unveils all the drama that happened with Apple and how we got to keep the zap button.

Starbackr's Zap feature launched in 2022, sparked massive user engagement and led to the creation of the Current App. This app, unique amongst Nostr offerings, added economic value to zaps and attracted creators. When Apple demanded zaps be removed from posts, we refused to surrender. Instead, we negotiated for a compromise that maintains our integrity and honors Apple's policy. After several rejections, we've submitted our final revision. This struggle transcends keeping our app in the App Store; it's about defending our principles. We'll keep you updated as the battle continues.
