Minister Says He’s Working With G7 to Set up AI Safety Organization

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon says he has talked to his international counterparts about setting up an organization to tackle AI safety. Solomon says he spoke with counterparts at the G7 today about establishing an international “tech stability board.” He says the board would evaluate AI models for testing before they are released. Solomon says the safety of AI is a key government priority and he also spoke with other G20 countries about the issue on Friday. Warnings about the risks AI poses to humans have prompted global alarm in recent weeks. Prime Minister Mark Carney said last week a global “tech stability” body along the lines of the Financial Stability Board would make sense.

BC Government Files Lawsuit Against OpenAI Over Tumbler Ridge Shooting

The B.C. government has filed a lawsuit against artificial intelligence firm OpenAI in California, arguing that one call to Canadian authorities could have stopped the deadly mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Attorney General Niki Sharma announced the filing on Sept. 21, saying the province is seeking accountability from OpenAI and those responsible for the company’s strategic decisions. British Columbia is also seeking to recoup expenses tied to the February shootings that claimed eight lives, including five Grade 7 students and an educational assistant from the secondary school in the small northeastern B.C. community. Sharma said OpenAI neglected to alert law enforcement about troubling exchanges that took place between the 18-year-old gunman, Jesse Van Rootselaar, and the firm’s AI chatbot ChatGPT.
