Ottawa Indefinitely Extends MAID Exclusion for Those Whose Sole Condition Is Mental Illness
The federal government will table legislation to indefinitely exclude people whose sole medical condition is a mental illness from receiving medical assistance in dying (MAID), Justice Minister Sean Fraser announced on Oct. 7. Fraser said the decision reflected the recommendations of a special parliamentary committee on MAID, which recommended that people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness remain excluded from eligibility. “It also reflects the engagement that I’ve had, that my department has had over the course of my time in this particular position. While there is not a perfect consensus on this issue, we believe this is the correct approach at this particular time,” Fraser said....

Canadian Buoy Drifts Across Atlantic, Washes up on Shore of Irish Island
Officials in northwestern Ireland say they’re working to recover a large Canadian buoy that floated across the Atlantic Ocean and washed up on a coastal island. A news release from Mayo County Council says the mariner marker, weighing in at roughly 3.5 tonnes, came ashore on Achill Island, known for its rugged mountains and bright sandy beaches. It says council was told by the Canadian Coast Guard that its buoys, while “very friendly,” have quite the habit of drifting far from home. The council is looking to recover the buoy so as to prevent it from floating away and becoming a hazard to vessels or coastal infrastructure.

Weston family holding company Wittington Investments said Wednesday that it will purchase Boots for US$8.9 billion (C$12.7 billion), including debt, from private equity firm Sycamore Partners. Along with Boots’ retail operations in the U.K. and Ireland, Wittington will acquire its operations in Thailand, franchised businesses, its optical division and No7 Beauty Company.
