Separatist PQ to Form Minority Government in Quebec

The Parti Québécois (PQ) has won Quebec’s Oct. 5 election and will form a minority government under leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon. The result marks a major comeback for the party, which won just three seats in the 2022 election. The PQ won 59 seats, five short of the 64 required for a majority government. The Quebec Liberals finished second with 40 seats, followed by the Quebec Conservatives with 19 and Québec solidaire with nine. The incumbent Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) was shut out of the legislature, without any seats. The last time the PQ formed government was Pauline Marois’s brief, two-year minority administration from 2012 to 2014.

Riders Rally Over Potholes as Land Tax Cut Locked In

Voters have been promised a cut to controversial land taxes as hordes of motorcyclists demand pothole fixes be placed at the centre of Victoria’s election campaign. Opposition Leader Jess Wilson addressed the crowd—which organisers estimated was thousands-strong—at the “Broken roads, Broken promises” rally on Sunday, while Premier Ben Carroll said he had spoken to campaigners a day earlier about their concerns. One of the organisers, Michael White, told AAP that fixing the problem meant not just filling in potholes, but ripping up and redoing large sections of the state’s roads. “We don’t care what party it is, we want the roads fixed,” he said.

Authorities Probe FlyDubai Co-Pilot’s Australian Ties

Counter-terrorism investigators are probing potential Australian links of the co-pilot of a FlyDubai plane that nearly crashed when he allegedly attacked the captain. Hamam al-Hammami is accused of trying to seize control of the commercial flight while he and the pilot were in the cockpit of a plane bound for Tel Aviv. Officials from the UAE, which is leading the investigation, said the co-pilot struck the pilot with a cockpit crash axe and attempted to take over the plane in an incident being treated as a terrorist attack. His actions nearly crashed the flight with 182 people on board before passengers and others rushed in and subdued him.

Ontario Air Ambulance Carrying 6 People Missing Off US Coast

A search by the U.S. Coast Guard is underway for an Ontario air ambulance carrying six people after the aircraft lost contact with the Federal Aviation Administration early Oct. 3 while travelling from Bermuda to Boston. According to flight tracking data, the aircraft departed L.F. Wade International Airport at approximately 11:40 p.m. ET on Oct. 2 (12:40 a.m. local time on Oct. 3). Air traffic control lost contact with the flight roughly one hour and 45 minutes into the journey, at around 1:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 3, as the aircraft was approaching Boston. Four Canadians—two pilots and two medical crew members—as well as a patient from Bermuda and a family member travelling with the patient were on board....
