GENESIS 2:19 — THE NAMING
The Verse
Genesis 2:19 — “And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.”
What This Verse Actually Says
“Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air.”
God made the animals from the same ground He made Adam from. Same substance. Same origin.
“And brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them.”
God brought the animals to Adam. Not to the angels. Not to the leaders. To Adam. And He watched. He wanted to see what Adam would do.
“And whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.”
Whatever Adam named it — that was its name. God didn’t correct him. God didn’t override him. God gave Adam authority and let him use it.
What This Reveals About God
- God gives authority to His children.
Not just to the leaders. Not just to the special ones. To Adam. To the human. To us.
- God trusts us with choice.
He could have named the animals Himself. He didn’t. He let Adam do it. He trusted Adam with the naming.
- God watches with interest.
He brought the animals “to see what he would call them.” God is not distant. He’s watching. He’s invested. He cares about what we do with what He gives us.
- God honors what we decide.
Whatever Adam named them — that was the name. God didn’t override him. God didn’t say “no, that’s wrong.” He honored the authority He gave.
What They Missed
They made authority something only leaders have.
But Genesis 2:19 shows God giving authority to the human — not to a priest, not to a king, not to a church. To Adam.
They made naming into something only God can do.
But God handed the naming to Adam. We name things too. We name our children. We name our work. We name our purpose. The authority to name is ours.
They ignored the trust part.
God trusted Adam with real authority. Not pretend authority. Not symbolic authority. Real authority.
And they’ve been telling us for centuries that we don’t have it. That only they do. That we need them to name things for us.
Genesis 2:19 says otherwise.
How This Applies to the Oppressed and Vulnerable
When you have authority — you use it to defend those who don’t.
Proverbs 31:8-9 — “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
The authority God gave Adam wasn’t just for Adam. It was for the care of creation — including the vulnerable.
When you name the abuse — you’re defending the abused.
When you name the system — you’re defending the ones it crushes.
When you name the lies — you’re defending the ones being deceived.
Naming is not just personal. It’s protective.
How This Seeks Justice
Micah 6:8 — “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
The authority to name is the authority to call things what they are.
· Naming injustice is seeking justice
· Naming abuse is defending the oppressed
· Naming corruption is exposing darkness
You can’t seek justice if you can’t name what’s unjust.
How This Protects the Fatherless and Widows
Jeremiah 22:3 — “Execute judgment and righteousness and deliver the oppressed out of the hand of the oppressor and do not deceive, neither steal from the stranger nor from the fatherless nor from the widow.”
The authority to name is the authority to protect.
· Naming the harm done to the fatherless is defending them
· Naming what the widow lost is restoring her
· Naming the system that crushed them is delivering them
Silence protects the oppressor. Naming protects the oppressed.
How This Produces Tangible Action
James 2:26 — “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”
Naming is action.
· You name the abuse — and the abuser is exposed
· You name the lie — and the liar is revealed
· You name the system — and the system is dismantled
Words have power. And the power to name is the power to act.
What This Means For You
- You have authority.
Not because a church gave it to you. Not because a leader approved it. Because God gave it to you — the same way He gave it to Adam.
- You have the right to name.
Your story. Your purpose. Your work. You get to name it.
- God trusts you.
He trusted Adam with the naming. He trusts you with what He’s placed in your hands.
- God is watching — with interest.
He’s not distant. He’s not indifferent. He brought the animals to Adam to see what he would do. He’s watching to see what you’ll do too.
- What you decide matters.
Whatever Adam named it — that was the name. What you decide matters. What you call forth matters. What you name matters.
- Naming is defending.
When you name what’s wrong — you’re protecting the ones it’s hurting.
The Pattern
Formation—Trust—Authority—Honor—Protection.
God formed the animals. God brought them to Adam. God gave Adam the authority to name. God honored what Adam decided. And Adam used that authority to care for creation.
That same pattern still holds.
The Hook
The hook they used was dependency.
They told you that you couldn’t name things yourself. That you needed them to name things for you. That you needed their interpretation, their approval, their authority.
But Genesis 2:19 says God gave the naming to Adam.
Not to them. Not to the church. Not to the leaders.
To the human.
To you.
And when you name — you protect. When you name — you defend. When you name — you free.
