A little experiment in curiosity, privacy and digital identity.
I was curious.
After using AI for quite some time, I asked a simple question:
“What do you know about me?”
The answer was surprisingly detailed. It brought together things I’d shared in previous conversations: my lifestyle, my interests, my projects, my technology preferences and the way I approach certain topics.
Some things were accurate. Others were wrong.
And that was probably the most interesting part.
AI remembers. But does it really know you?
AI can connect information you’ve shared across conversations, depending on the features and context available to it. It can recognize recurring themes, recall project details and summarize preferences.
But there’s a difference between remembering something and understanding a person.
A detail can be outdated. A preference can be misunderstood. An assumption can sound like a fact simply because it’s written confidently.
Even AI gets things wrong.
That’s a useful reminder not to take every answer at face value, even when it sounds convincing.
A digital picture of me
The broad picture wasn’t entirely surprising.
Freedom, minimalism, privacy, independence and technology are recurring themes in my life. I’ve spent years traveling, and I have a strong interest in open-source software, self-hosting, decentralization, Nostr and Bitcoin.
I enjoy exploring alternatives to centralized platforms and building digital tools.
My private project, Privexa, is part of that interest. It’s something I work on because I care about privacy and digital sovereignty, not because I’m building a business.
One sentence captures much of my philosophy:
“Freedom is a lifestyle, not a destination.”
But even a reasonably accurate summary is only a snapshot. It doesn’t tell the whole story of a person.
The privacy question
The experiment also raised a more important question: how much information do we share with AI and other digital services?
Every conversation can reveal small pieces of information. Interests, habits, preferences and ongoing projects can gradually form a recognizable picture.
Not every individual detail is sensitive. The combination of many details can be more revealing than any one of them alone.
That’s why I believe privacy matters, even when you have nothing to hide.
Privacy isn’t about being suspicious of everything or disappearing from the internet. It’s about deciding what you share, with whom, and for what purpose.
And it means remembering that convenience always deserves a closer look when it comes at the cost of personal information.
What I learned
Asking AI what it knows about me was a small experiment, but it highlighted three things:
-
Memory isn’t the same as truth. Information can be incomplete, outdated or misunderstood.
-
A summary isn’t an identity. No collection of conversations can fully define a person.
-
Privacy starts with awareness. Understanding what we share is part of maintaining control over our digital lives.
AI can be a useful tool for reflection, organization and creativity. I use it to explore ideas, work on projects and sometimes look at my own digital footprint from a different perspective.
But I don’t want technology to define who I am, and I don’t want convenience to replace critical thinking.
I’ll keep using the tools that are useful to me, questioning their limitations and protecting the information that doesn’t need to be shared.
Because digital freedom isn’t just about which software we use.
It’s also about how much control we retain over ourselves.
Stay humble. Stack sats. Be nice.
And never stop asking questions.
