Google’s Gemini Is Closing In on ChatGPT as It Nears 1 Billion Users

During its Q2 2026 earnings report, Google announced that its Gemini AI assistant has grown to 950 million monthly active users, a significant increase from 750 million in February. The growth positions Gemini as a strong competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, which recently surpassed one billion monthly users.

Google’s Gemini Is Closing In on ChatGPT as It Nears 1 Billion Users
Google’s AI race is no longer theoretical. With Gemini now at 950 million monthly users, Google is rapidly narrowing the gap with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and signaling that its assistant is becoming one of the company’s next mass-market products.

The new figure came during Alphabet’s Q2 2026 earnings report, and it marks a sharp climb from the more than 750 million monthly users Google disclosed in February. Several reports framed the number less as a milestone in isolation and more as evidence that Gemini is becoming a genuine challenger in consumer AI.

Business Insider emphasized the competitive angle, noting that Gemini is “closing in” on ChatGPT’s roughly 1 billion monthly users and that daily active users have tripled over the past year. TechCrunch made a similar point, describing Gemini as Google’s next likely billion-user product and placing that growth alongside other Google services that already operate at enormous scale.

The broader argument from Google’s side is that product iteration is driving adoption. TechCrunch cited CEO Sundar Pichai saying users are responding to newer “agentic” tools, including Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, while the company continues to push features quickly. Business Insider also pointed to Google’s release of faster, cheaper models, including Gemini 3.6 Flash, as part of that strategy.

At the same time, the numbers show how close — but not quite equal — the contest remains. The Verge focused on the raw user gain from February to July, while TechCrunch noted that ChatGPT crossed 1 billion monthly active users in June. In other words, Gemini’s momentum is clear, but OpenAI still appears to hold a narrow lead.

What is less disputed across coverage is the direction of travel: Gemini is no longer just a Google side project. It is fast becoming a central front in the company’s effort to keep its dominance in search-era computing from slipping in the AI era.
