AMD bets $5 billion on Anthropic as the AI chip race widens
AMD said Wednesday it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, deepening its push to challenge Nvidia in the fast-growing market for AI infrastructure. The move, first framed as a major chip-and-capital partnership, ties AMD’s hardware ambitions directly to one of the most prominent AI model developers.

According to reports, the agreement goes beyond financing. Anthropic is expected to use AMD’s Instinct MI450 AI GPUs through AMD’s new Helios rack-scale system, with the companies planning the first gigawatt of deployment in the first half of 2027. That timeline places the deal within a broader buildout of computing capacity as AI companies race to secure enough chips and power for model training and deployment.

The partnership also runs in the other direction: AMD plans to integrate Anthropic’s Claude AI into its own software development, engineering, and product development workflows.
