In February 2026, Anthropic made its first donation to Public First Action, describing the group as a non-partisan organization that “educates the public about AI” and works with Republicans, Democrats, and Independents on “sensible AI safeguards.” The money was earmarked for public education and policy work, not candidate electioneering.

The company framed the move as a response to rapidly advancing AI models like its own Claude Mythos Preview, which it said had uncovered thousands of high‑severity software vulnerabilities — including in major operating systems and browsers — illustrating how powerful tools could help defenders but also threaten critical infrastructure if misused.

§July 21–22: Anthropic doubles down to $40 million

On July 21, Anthropic announced it was “contributing an additional $20 million to Public First Action, bringing our total support to $40 million.” Axios reported this effectively doubled the company’s funding for AI transparency and safeguards efforts ahead of the elections.

Anthropic reiterated that both donations “cannot be used to influence the election of any candidate for federal, state, or local office” and are dedicated to Public First Action’s policy mission. Still, the group is a 501(c)(4) tied to three super PACs backing candidates across the political spectrum who support AI safeguards.

Business Insider reported that Anthropic is now “looking to throw its weight around ahead of this November’s midterm elections,” with $40 million routed through Public First Action, which is “tied to three allied super PACs that have already supported Republican and Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.”

Public First Action has positioned itself against Leading the Future, a rival super PAC funded by OpenAI president Greg Brockman and prominent investors, which is pushing rapid AI development and lighter regulation. Anthropic describes its own donation as a way “to raise the salience of this urgent policy debate” and urges policymakers to “put forward measures that mitigate risks.”

As AI becomes a sharper election issue, AI-aligned advocacy groups on both sides are entering the midterms with “massive amounts of cash” to shape public understanding and policy on AI safeguards versus acceleration.
