Chinese startup Moonshot AI’s newest model, Kimi K3, rocketed from launch to overload in a matter of days, forcing the company to halt new sign-ups even as it is hailed as a major challenger to US AI leaders.

Launch: A new Chinese “frontier” model

Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3 on Friday, pitching it as “Open Frontier Intelligence” designed for coding, knowledge work, and complex reasoning, and aiming to rival models from OpenAI and Anthropic. The release joined a wave of Chinese frontier systems that analysts say are rapidly closing the gap with top US labs.

Weekend surge and sudden capacity crunch

Within 48 hours of launch, demand spiked. In an X post, Moonshot said Kimi K3 had “received far more love than we expected, and our GPUs are feeling it,” adding that usage had pushed “close to the limits of our current capacity.” To protect existing customers, the company “temporarily pausing new subscriptions” and promised to reopen spots “in batches” while rapidly adding compute.

Moonshot also began testing split membership tiers — a general Kimi membership and a Kimi Code plan — to “match compute more precisely and keep the experience stable.”

Global reaction: performance, safety, and competitiveness

Benchmarks and practitioners quickly touted K3’s capabilities. One tech investor said Kimi K3 fixed “15 critical security bugs” that US models like Codex and Fable refused to handle due to “cyber guardrails,” arguing that limiting American models “only” makes the US “less competitive.” Another user report praised switching from Claude because Kimi “just does the thing instead of lecturing you,” calling tightly constrained systems “the enemy of American competitiveness.”

AI researchers and benchmark groups highlighted K3 as an open-weight model that can match or even surpass leading proprietary systems in web engineering, spreadsheets, cybersecurity, and agentic tasks, while noting trade-offs in cost and speed.

Moonshot plans to release Kimi K3’s full open weights on July 27, a move observers say could make it the top open model globally and further intensify the US–China AI race.
