Google and Samsung are racing to turn smart glasses from niche gadgets into mainstream accessories, blending high-end fashion with on-device AI just months before their planned fall launch.

Early prototypes and the Android XR push

Nearly a year and a half ago, Google quietly began testing prototype Android XR glasses, positioning them as a more portable, discreet alternative to bulky mixed-reality headsets. These early devices, built around Google’s broader Android XR platform, aimed to show that spatial computing could work in everyday life without a full helmet-like display.

By mid-2026, Google was ready to publicly show progress. A key pillar is Project Aura, developed with Xreal, which sits between a full headset and lighter mixed-reality glasses. Hardware updates since October include a redesigned compute puck, a fingerprint scanner for easier unlocking, and multiple wear options like a waist clip and lanyard.

Project Aura targets XR diehards

Project Aura is explicitly not aimed at the average consumer but at XR enthusiasts who want a “more portable and discreet version of a headset,” with an interface that closely mirrors Samsung’s Galaxy XR. Demonstrations have focused on spatial apps such as mixed-reality tabletop games, multiple floating app windows, 3D AR doodles, and even visualizing molecular structures of real-world objects — all without requiring a conventional headset.

Fashion-forward smart glasses for the fall

In parallel, Samsung and Google are preparing more stylish smart glasses that put design and AI at the forefront. Announced around Samsung’s July 2026 Unpacked event, these glasses will debut this fall with Google’s Gemini AI built in, shipping in designs first revealed in May plus two new looks created with fashion brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.

The dual-track strategy highlights the core tension: Google and Samsung are courting power users with advanced XR hardware while simultaneously partnering with fashion labels to convince everyday wearers that AI smart glasses can look as normal as regular eyewear.
