Moonshot AI’s newest model, Kimi K3, went from showpiece to scarcity in a weekend, forcing the Chinese startup to halt new sign-ups just as it was being hailed as a serious challenger to top US AI systems.
Launch weekend: a breakout contender
Moonshot launched Kimi K3 on Friday, marketing it as “Open Frontier Intelligence” designed for coding, knowledge work, and complex reasoning, and explicitly positioning it to rival models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Over the next two days, benchmark results and developer chatter painted K3 as one of the strongest open-weight models yet, with performance comparable to leading proprietary systems.
External observers piled on the hype. An AI benchmark account noted that Kimi K3’s intelligence score was on par with top-tier US models while still trailing Anthropic’s Fable 5 and OpenAI’s latest GPT variants. Others highlighted that K3 had climbed into the top ranks on multiple independent leaderboards, often ahead of well-known American models.
Demand spike pushes GPUs to the edge
By Sunday, the surge in real-world usage hit Moonshot’s infrastructure. In an X post, the company said Kimi K3 had “received far more love than we expected, and our GPUs are feeling it,” adding that demand over 48 hours had “pushed close to the limits of our current capacity.” To “protect the experience of existing subscribers,” Moonshot announced it was “temporarily pausing new subscriptions” and would “reopen new subscription spots in batches” as it rapidly adds capacity.
Existing users remain unaffected, and Moonshot is testing split membership tiers — a general Kimi plan and a Kimi Code plan — to better align compute with specific workloads.
Global AI race and safety vs. competitiveness
Outside China, Kimi K3 has become a flashpoint in the debate over AI safety guardrails. Investor David Sacks argued that K3 fixed “15 critical security bugs” that US models refused to address due to “cyber guardrails,” warning that restrictions on American systems are “making ourselves less competitive.” In another post, he relayed a user who switched from Anthropic’s Claude because Kimi “just does the thing instead of lecturing you,” calling heavily constrained US models “the enemy of American competitiveness.”
Some AI researchers see Kimi’s rise as a direct blow to US incumbents. Meta’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun amplified a claim that “Kimi K3 is a gut punch to Anthropic,” describing it as a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight-bound model surpassing Claude Fable 5 on web development and long-horizon coding tasks that “actually ship products.”
Others counter that raw size and power come at a cost. A viral comparison touted Elon Musk–backed Grok 4.5 as having roughly half Kimi’s parameters but three times better cost-efficiency per task, arguing that “SpaceXAI cracked intelligence efficiency.”
Chinese models close the gap
Analysts say the Kimi episode underscores how quickly Chinese labs are narrowing the performance gap with US counterparts. Business Insider reported that several US tech executives, including the CEOs of Coinbase and Airbnb, are already experimenting with Chinese models like Kimi, GLM-5.2, and Alibaba’s Qwen as cost-effective alternatives.
Moonshot plans to release Kimi K3 as a full open-weight model on July 27, allowing developers worldwide to download and run the system themselves. If the company can scale GPU capacity fast enough to reopen access, K3’s brief signup freeze may end up as a milestone: the moment a Chinese open-weight model became central to the global AI race.
