Google DeepMind is rolling out a sweeping bioresilience program that leans on the same powerful AI models critics say could heighten biological risks, betting tighter guardrails and government partnerships can keep the technology on the right side of the line.
Early push for standards and safety
In the days leading up to the launch, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis urged the creation of a government-backed standards body for frontier AI, arguing for a more “systematic” regulatory approach funded by industry and staffed by technical experts. This agenda framed the backdrop for Thursday’s announcement of a new bioresilience program aimed at helping governments and researchers prevent, detect and respond to biological threats.
Google DeepMind publicly cast the biosecurity context as “rapidly evolving,” pointing to shifting ecosystems, global travel and potential AI misuse as drivers of new risks. On social media, Hassabis amplified the company’s message that it is “deploying frontier AI to build proactive defenses for global health.”
Building bioresilience with AI
The initiative, launched alongside Isomorphic Labs, formalizes a dual strategy: preventing misuse of models while empowering experts to use them for defense. Over the past 12 months, DeepMind says it has built more than 15 partnerships with governments, biosecurity organizations and research groups to detect outbreaks more quickly and respond more effectively.
DeepMind highlights breakthroughs such as AlphaFold, which mapped the 3D structures of nearly all known proteins, and Isomorphic Labs’ Drug Design Engine as tools that can “accelerate the discovery of therapeutics” and enable proactive defenses.
Human oversight and risk thresholds
From the human governance side, DeepMind executives stress that expanded access to its models will be limited to “trusted researchers, governments and biosecurity partners,” under what it classifies as “low-risk” restricted releases rather than open public deployments.
Helen King, DeepMind’s vice president of responsibility, said the company would halt launches if evaluations showed it was “reaching a critical capability level” without adequate mitigations. Senior policy lead Owen Larter added that major AI labs are “in agreement” on the need for rigorous testing before releasing frontier models, aligning the bioresilience program with a broader push for durable, government-anchored AI safety frameworks.
