Meta’s Secretive $10 Billion Anthropic Deal Could Rewire the AI Cloud Race
Meta’s push to turn its vast infrastructure into a cloud business is colliding with Anthropic’s exploding demand for computing power, setting up a potential $10 billion deal that could reshape who controls the next wave of AI.

Early talks and a giant price tag

On July 17, reports emerged that Meta and Anthropic are in negotiations for a data center and compute deal worth up to $10 billion, as Meta explores monetizing its infrastructure beyond social media and ads. The arrangement under discussion would see Meta lease data center capacity and AI computing power to Anthropic, effectively positioning Meta as a major cloud provider to one of the leading AI startups.

Meta’s cloud ambitions take shape

The talks come as Meta dramatically ramps up its infrastructure spending, with about $145 billion earmarked for data centers and related investments, a scale that puts it closer to hyperscalers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google than a traditional social network. Internally, the deal is seen as a test case for launching a broader cloud business, turning sunk infrastructure costs into a new revenue stream.

How the deal could work for Anthropic

Separate reporting indicates the prospective agreement could be structured over two years, with Anthropic paying Meta in monthly increments for access to computing power. This would sit alongside Anthropic’s own aggressive buildout: the company plans to invest $50 billion in its own data centers and has already signed multibillion-dollar capacity deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf.

Shifting power in the AI ecosystem

If finalized, the partnership would deepen Anthropic’s multi-cloud strategy while giving Meta a marquee anchor customer for a nascent cloud arm. That, in turn, could challenge the current dominance of established cloud providers in supplying the compute that underpins frontier AI models.
