China’s latest AI model, Kimi K3, has turned a long-forecast race into a near dead heat, forcing U.S. tech giants and policymakers to confront the possibility that America’s AI edge may already be gone.

In mid-July, ahead of launch, reporting signaled that Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI was preparing a system designed to directly challenge Anthropic’s frontier models.
