Google Opens Vids to Everyone as It Adds Eerily Lifelike Personal AI Avatars
Google is widening access to its AI video editor Vids at the same time it is introducing tools that can convincingly speak in a user’s own face and voice, sharpening both its productivity pitch and questions about how personal AI should become.

2025–2026: From Workspace experiment to broad rollout

Launched last year as part of Google Workspace, Vids began as an AI-assisted presentation tool that helped users auto-generate storyboards, suggested scenes, stock images and background music for quick corporate videos. Initially, it was limited to paying Workspace or AI plan subscribers.

On July 16, 2026, Google announced that “Google will now let everyone use its AI-powered video editor Vids,” rolling out a basic version to all users with templates, stock media and a “subset of AI capabilities.” This free tier is aimed at making it easier for individuals and small teams to assemble product demos, training clips and support videos without professional editing skills.

2026: Advanced AI features and personal avatars

At the same time, Google is layering in more advanced AI tools that will sit above the basic version. Those include AI-powered removal of filler words and pauses from recordings, and the ability to generate short, eight‑second clips around a specific image, such as a new product shot, to speed up content creation workflows.

A major shift comes with avatar technology. After first adding only pre‑made AI presenters last year, “Vids got AI-generated avatars last year, but they were initially pre-made options.” Now, Google Vids “will now let you generate AI videos of yourself.” With a selfie and a voice clip, users can generate what Google calls “personal avatars” — digital versions of themselves that “can speak a script you type out.”

Behind the scenes, Google is also integrating its Gemini Omni model so users can generate and edit clips with natural language instructions, further automating the production process.

Together, the wider rollout and increasingly personal AI features position Vids as a mainstream video tool while raising new expectations — and potential concerns — about how closely our digital doubles should resemble us.
