OnePlus’ Shock Retreat Leaves US and Europe to Oppo’s ColorOS Future
OnePlus’ abrupt retreat from the US and Europe caps months of rumors and conflicting corporate reassurances, leaving customers dependent on parent company Oppo for support and future software.
Rumors and early signals
Speculation intensified in mid-July when reports suggested OnePlus and Oppo were preparing to pull the OnePlus brand from the US and European markets. The move was framed as the culmination of “months of rumors about the future of OnePlus,” including claims the company was being “dismantled.”
At the time, OnePlus publicly pushed back. The company insisted that “OnePlus North America continues to operate, with full guarantee of users’ after-sales support, software updates, and rights commitments,” signaling business as usual even as its European unit admitted it was “evaluating its regional roadmap and product strategy.”
Official exit announced
Three days later, OnePlus officially confirmed what observers had anticipated: it is “quitting the US and European markets, and will no longer launch new products in either region.” Oppo stepped in to reassure existing customers, promising it “will honor existing support and warranty agreements,” with devices in these regions transitioning to its ColorOS for future updates.
Oppo’s senior PR manager in Europe said “software updates and after-sale support will be guaranteed” in both the US and Europe, though specifics for the US remain unclear now that OnePlus will have “no presence at all” there.
What changes for users — and what’s next
To maintain software support, existing phones will be moved from OnePlus’ OxygenOS to Oppo’s ColorOS “in the coming months.” Oppo Europe CEO Elvis Zhou added that owners can roll back to OxygenOS, but will likely forfeit future updates by doing so.
Looking ahead, Bloomberg has reported that by next year OnePlus may leave India and all remaining markets except China, while Oppo confirms only that “OnePlus’ product roadmap in China remains unchanged.” At the same time, sister brand Realme will be “undergoing restructuring” and “will focus on overseas markets and no longer launch new products in China,” signaling a broader strategic reshuffle within Oppo’s portfolio.
