Early groundwork and life-sciences push

Anthropic began its recent life-sciences effort last fall, improving model capabilities and building connections to tools and databases before unveiling Claude Science as its “most significant expansion” in this area. The company pitches the app as an environment that pulls together PubMed, Jupyter, R, cluster terminals, and dozens of databases so researchers can run entire projects in one place.

June 30 launch: a lab workbench, not a new model

On June 30, Anthropic formally launched Claude Science in beta, calling it an “AI workbench for scientists” that consolidates scattered tools and lets AI agents run large parts of the work. The app integrates commonly used research packages, produces “auditable artifacts,” and connects to over 60 scientific databases and skills tailored to genomics, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics.

Multiple outlets emphasized that Claude Science is not a new biology model but a dedicated environment built on the same Claude models, including Opus 4.8. Anthropic is instead “betting its growth on vertical, workflow-level products rather than just raw model capability,” aiming to become the operating layer for domains like life sciences, as Claude Code has for software development.

Features: coordination, reproducibility, pharma ambitions

At launch, a generalist coordinating agent can spin up specialist sub-agents, move between tools, and iteratively refine figures, structures, and manuscripts until ready to publish, with every output carrying the exact code, environment, and history needed for reproducibility. A separate reviewer agent checks citations and calculations, designed to catch fabricated references before they reach a paper.

Anthropic positioned Claude Science as a flagship product on par with Claude Code and Claude Cowork, highlighting plans to apply it to its own drug discovery work on rare and neglected diseases—and to generate new pharma revenue in the process.

Competitive context: workflow vs. frontier models

The launch lands amid intensifying competition in AI for science, long dominated by Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold but now challenged by fast-moving LLM-based platforms. While Anthropic focuses on orchestration and reproducibility, OpenAI is showcasing raw model progress with tools like GeneBench-Pro, a benchmark for “judgment-heavy analysis” in computational biology that would take human experts 20–40 hours to complete—and on which its GPT-5.6 Sol model is described as “a big step forward.”

Together, these moves capture a growing split in strategy: some labs chase smarter scientific models, while Anthropic is betting that owning scientists’ day-to-day workflow may prove just as transformative.
