Early July 2026: Gemini AI comes to Waze

On July 13, Waze detailed “new AI-powered features and customization updates,” including deeper integration of Google’s Gemini assistant into the navigation app. The move is part of Google’s broader push to infuse Gemini “across its products” and sharpen Waze’s edge against rivals like Apple Maps.

Waze’s first Gemini-powered tools build on earlier voice features. An updated conversational reporting system now lets drivers describe incidents or map issues naturally—such as road closures or outdated addresses—without tapping through menus. A new “Destination Search” allows drivers to ask things like “Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now” or “Find me a gas station nearby with the lowest prices,” and get a curated list of options.

Personalization and rider-focused features roll out

Alongside voice upgrades, Waze is launching personalized routing that suggests routes based on a driver’s trip history and the app’s understanding of local traffic patterns. If a user typically prefers highways over local streets, those options will appear first, with the ability to turn personalization off entirely in settings.

A new Motorcycle Mode uses AI to factor in two-wheeler shortcuts, specific road restrictions, and hazards like potholes, speed bumps, and narrow bridges, promising more accurate ETAs for riders. The mode is debuting in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines, with more markets planned.

Balancing AI ambition with driver control

Not all updates are AI-heavy. Waze is adding a “less chatty” voice option so drivers can reduce navigation interruptions while keeping directions active. Observers note that while Waze is “getting a bunch of new AI-powered features,” Google has still “held off on giving Waze a full AI revamp,” instead reserving many advanced capabilities for Google Maps. The staggered approach highlights Google’s effort to boost Waze’s appeal without undermining its flagship navigation platform.
