Google’s New AI Ad Labels Spark Fresh Questions About Transparency
Google is moving to label ads made with generative AI, aiming to boost transparency just as synthetic images and videos become easier to produce and harder for users to spot.
Early concerns and the road to disclosure
As AI tools for image generation spread through marketing, critics warned that “synthetic or digitally altered content” could mislead consumers even when it didn’t break formal ad rules. Until recently, Google only required explicit disclosures for such content in election-related ads, leaving commercial promotions largely unmarked.
July 9, 2026: Google unveils AI ad labeling
On July 9, 2026, Google announced it “will now tell you if an ad was made with AI,” introducing a standard label for marketing materials created or edited with its generative tools. The label — “created or edited with AI” — appears in a new “How this ad was made” section inside Google’s My Ad Center, accessible from the three-dot or info icon on ads across Search, Discover, and YouTube.
According to Google’s implementation plan, any ad built with its own AI advertising tools will receive the disclosure automatically. For ads produced using external AI systems, advertisers must manually indicate that AI was involved; Google will not independently verify this.
Expanding transparency tools and global rollout
In some regions, Google says the AI label “may also appear directly on the ad,” either when local law requires it or when advertisers self-report AI use. The move builds on previous steps, including 2024 rules for political ads and expanded access to tools like SynthID and C2PA content labels to flag deepfakes.
Industry observers note that the change brings Google closer to rivals like Meta, which already offers an “AI info” label in its “About this ad” panel, while still relying heavily on advertiser honesty rather than technical detection.
