The beta release on June 30 made Claude Science available to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. TechCrunch emphasized that Claude Science is “not a new AI model” but a workflow product that runs the same Claude models already on sale, including Opus 4.8, with no special access or gating. Instead, Anthropic is “betting its growth on vertical, workflow-level products rather than just raw model capability,” using a main AI assistant that connects to more than 60 scientific databases and can spawn specialized sub-assistants, plus a separate fact-checker agent that reviews citations and calculations.

The Next Web similarly described Claude Science as an app that “pulls a researcher’s scattered tools into one place and lets AI agents run large parts of the work,” calling it Anthropic’s “biggest push yet into the lab.” It highlighted reproducibility: every figure comes with the exact code and environment that produced it, along with a plain-language explanation and full message history so results can be traced and edited later.

Strategic stakes and pharma focus

MIT Technology Review reported that the launch was announced at an event for pharmaceutical executives, biotech founders, and researchers, presenting Claude Science as a major new product to support computational biology and drug development in much the same way Claude Code supports software engineering. Anthropic also said it will use Claude Science internally for its own research into drugs for rare, neglected diseases, a move that could open new revenue streams in pharma.

From Anthropic’s perspective, Claude Science is about speeding up discovery and making outputs “auditable” and reproducible by attaching a full history to every result. TechCrunch and The Next Web stress the day-to-day relief for scientists who juggle dozens of tools and databases, suggesting the biggest innovation is consolidation and automation rather than new raw model capabilities.

Technology Review and the FT, meanwhile, situate the launch in a broader competitive and financial context: Anthropic is elevating AI for science to flagship status, directly courting pharma and trying to own the “operating layer” of scientific R&D—while entering a space long dominated by Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold and related work.
