On June 24, at its investor day in New York, Qualcomm disclosed that Meta will be the first named customer for its Dragonfly C1000 data center processor, a general‑purpose server CPU designed to sit alongside the company’s AI accelerators in hyperscale facilities. The chip is not expected to be available until 2028, underscoring that Meta’s commitment is a forward-looking bet on Qualcomm’s roadmap rather than an immediate deployment.

The Dragonfly announcement came as part of a broader product reveal filling in details teased earlier at Computex. Qualcomm outlined three Dragonfly product categories — data center CPUs, AI inference accelerators, and custom silicon for hyperscalers — and introduced an AI300 accelerator to complement its AI200 and AI250 chips geared specifically toward running, rather than training, large AI models at scale.

In parallel, Qualcomm confirmed it will acquire AI software startup Modular in an all‑stock deal worth roughly $3.9 billion, gaining the Mojo programming language and MAX inference engine, which can run models across chips from Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Qualcomm. This is intended to give the company a software layer that can help attract developers and make its hardware easier to adopt.

Financially, the Meta deal and a higher revenue outlook helped lift Qualcomm’s shares by as much as 15%, signaling investor enthusiasm for its push beyond smartphones into data center infrastructure. Coverage of the move has framed it as “the strongest signal yet” that Qualcomm is serious about competing in the AI data center market, while also noting that its performance at hyperscale remains “unproven at scale.”

Outside the filing rooms, excitement spilled onto social media. Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue amplified a “one more thing” announcement from the investor day about a partnership to bring open models to Qualcomm platforms, sharing it with a succinct “Qualcomm!” on X. The collaboration aims to let users deploy models “big or small” on Qualcomm hardware, with Modular’s tools extending that reach “beyond.” In a follow-up post, Delangue thanked Qualcomm chief executive Cristiano Amon for the surprise reveal.

Together, Meta’s long-term hardware commitment, the Modular acquisition, and the Hugging Face partnership depict a coordinated attempt by Qualcomm to build not just chips, but an ecosystem.
