On June 19, outlets reported that Jumper, a researcher at Google DeepMind since 2017 and co-creator of the AlphaFold protein-structure AI, had announced on X that he was leaving to join Anthropic after nearly nine years at Google. He and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for developing an open-source model that can predict the 3D structures of proteins, dramatically accelerating biological and medical research. A Business Insider profile emphasized that AlphaFold “predicts a protein’s 3D structure from its amino acid sequence” and has become a key resource for scientists worldwide.

Two days after Noam Shazeer, a co-inventor of the Transformer architecture and a DeepMind vice president working on Gemini, said he was leaving Google for OpenAI, Jumper announced his own departure for Anthropic, deepening concerns that Google is losing the AI talent race. Axios framed the twin exits as evidence that the “talent wars” have intensified as labs race toward artificial general intelligence.

From Google DeepMind’s perspective, the split is publicly cordial. Hassabis praised Jumper on X: “What we achieved with AlphaFold changed the world, and showed the field what was possible with AI for science and medicine, lighting the way for how AI can benefit humanity.” Jumper’s own post thanked the “entire GDM team” and called DeepMind “a special place,” saying he remained excited about its future discoveries.

Market and industry reactions have been sharper. One analysis said news of Jumper’s move “wip[ed] US$225bn off the market” value of Alphabet, casting the shift as part of a broader “tug on the talent war” in which Anthropic now appears to be “picking from the top shelf.” Another Business Insider report argued that the AI talent wars have entered a “celebrity era,” with high-profile names like Jumper, Shazeer, and former OpenAI cofounder Andrej Karpathy potentially “tipp[ing] the scales in the finely balanced AI race.”

Behind the scenes, financial incentives loom large. A separate investigation into Google’s recent string of AI departures concluded that the lure of lucrative pre-IPO equity at Anthropic and OpenAI is a powerful draw for researchers weighing where to place their bets on the future of AI.
