AlphaFold is now credited with offering more than 200 million protein structure predictions and dramatically speeding up drug discovery and biological research.

Jumper’s move came just days after transformer co‑inventor Noam Shazeer left Google for OpenAI, part of what Business Insider calls the “celebrity era” of AI hiring, where labs compete for superstar names in the quest for AI supremacy. Axios framed the exits as Google “taking the hit” in an intensifying talent war for those believed capable of steering the push toward artificial general intelligence.

Anthropic, already seen as a top destination for elite researchers and eyeing an IPO, is now portrayed as “picking from the top shelf” of AI talent with Jumper’s arrival. Alphabet’s stock dropped sharply after the announcements, erasing an estimated $225 billion in market value, underscoring how much financial weight investors place on a handful of AI luminaries.

Google, for its part, maintains it can still attract and retain leading researchers even amid fierce competition from Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI labs.
