Alex Bregman’s Scary Injury Puts the Cubs’ Playoff Push on Hold
A routine moment near the on-deck circle turned into a medical scare Sunday, when a foul ball struck Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman in the face and forced him out of a 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
The initial account emphasized uncertainty. Bregman was taken to a Cincinnati hospital for X-rays and CT scans after the ball struck his left cheekbone beneath the eye, leaving him with bleeding, swelling and an apparent facial injury. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said, “It’s a terrible, terrible accident. We hope he’s OK.”
The sequence was sudden: Michael Busch’s checked swing sent a ball toward Bregman, who was waiting in front of the on-deck circle. He immediately covered the left side of his face and ran toward the dugout before being escorted to the clubhouse. Busch described the danger in stark terms: “Any time it enters the head area, it’s always a scary thing.”
A more detailed later report portrayed the injury as severe-looking but offered a measure of reassurance. It said Bregman’s eye was swollen shut and his nose was plugged, while quoting an Instagram update from the player: “Thanks for the messages y’all. I’ll be back.” The same report said medical staff cleared him to travel back to Chicago with the team, though the extent of any absence remained unknown.
That distinction matters for a Cubs team in a tight National League wild-card race. Counsell said roster planning was secondary to Bregman’s health: “We’ve got to get good results from the hospital.” If Bregman lands on the injured list, the Cubs could turn to Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramirez at third base. The immediate story, however, is less about playoff strategy than the unpredictable risks players face from a ball traveling only a few feet away.
