Saudi Arabia and the Houthis Trade Explosive Claims Over a Drone Near Mecca
Saudi Arabia and the Houthis are offering sharply conflicting accounts of an alleged drone interception near Mecca, turning a reported military incident into a potent religious and geopolitical flashpoint.
Riyadh says its air defenses destroyed a Houthi drone south of the holy city before it entered restricted airspace. Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki called the security of Islam’s holy sites and pilgrims a “red line” and warned that Saudi Arabia would take deterrent measures. The claim carries particular weight in Saudi Arabia because Mecca hosts the annual Hajj pilgrimage and has previously been cited as a target in a 2017 missile incident.
The Houthis reject that interpretation. Spokesperson Hazem al-Assad dismissed the allegation as “a worn-out lie that has been used before and no longer fools anyone,” framing Riyadh’s account as recycled propaganda rather than evidence of an attack on Mecca. The group has nonetheless claimed responsibility for several recent strikes against Saudi targets, saying they are retaliation for Saudi-linked air operations in Yemen.
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation adopted Riyadh’s position, condemning what it described as a “heinous” attack and denouncing the Houthis’ “ongoing aggression against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.” That response gives the Saudi narrative wider diplomatic backing, but it does not independently establish whether the drone was aimed at Mecca or merely intercepted nearby.
Coverage has also diverged in tone. One sharply partisan account described the episode as an attempted strike on Islam’s holiest city and warned it could trigger a wider sectarian confrontation. More cautious reporting placed the incident within a broader escalation involving Saudi security alerts, Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and risks to regional oil and shipping routes.
The central dispute, therefore, is not whether tensions are rising—they clearly are—but whether the drone represented a deliberate assault on Mecca, as Saudi Arabia and the OIC contend, or a claim the Houthis say is politically manufactured.
