How Decent Newsroom works, and how to make it work for you.

What are Vanity Names?

What are Vanity Names and how to get one.

Vanity Names are unique identifiers within Decent Newsroom. Profile names are not unique on Nostr, but Vanity Names (powered by NIP-05) are reserved names that enable easier mentions and profile sharing. Vanity Names are subscription-based and paid in sats. You can claim the name for three months, or for a lifetime. Quarterly subscriptions can be extended whenever. To claim your Vanity Name, follow these steps:

  1. Log in at Decent Newsroom.
  2. Visit our Vanity Name Subscription page.
  3. Select the duration of your subscription: quarterly or lifetime.
  4. Pick a name. You will get immediate feedback, if the name is available.
  5. Pay the Lightning Network invoice.

Additional information:

  • If a Vanity Name you’ve entered is unavailable, a “This name is already taken” message will appear. At this time, we are unable to accept any requests to take over or claim a name that’s already been taken by another user.
  • If you change your name, or let it expire, the (previous) name will be free for any user to claim.
  • With an active Vanity Name, your profile is changed from https://decentnewsroom.com/p/<npub> to https://decentnewsroom.com/<vanity-name>.
  • To also claim the NIP-05 identity, add vanity-name@decentnewsroom.com to your profile metadata.
