Guardianship without office
The idea
Self-appointed guardians whose authority rests on observable behavior and reputation, not on any office. Schroeder & Wagner's strongest finding: "individuals acting as guardian of article" was rated important by 83% — the highest of all 24 mechanisms (Table 1, p. 1954) — despite guardians holding no formal role. Their authority is legitimized the way Tyler describes: peers accept influence from those whose visible conduct earns it (p. 1955). This grounds their anti-equipotentiality conclusion: "equipotentiality oversimplifies the complex mechanisms that control and guide the creation of open content" (1955) — flat access does not make flat power.
On Nostr the pattern recurs under a maximally flat protocol: no protocol role distinguishes any keypair, yet power gradients are steep — accounts with large follow counts steer norms, prolific client devs decide which mechanisms exist by shipping them, and big-relay operators guard de facto public squares. The Nostr advantage for study: the observable behavior that legitimizes a guardian is cryptographically observable — signed, typed, and complete — so guardianship can be measured rather than recalled.
Strain: Wikipedia's guardians guard a shared singular artifact (the article); Nostr guardians guard views — a mute list or relay policy binds only its subscribers. Guardianship without office becomes guardianship without a unique object, redundant and uncoordinated across actors.
