US Authorities Charge Washington Man as Co-Conspirator in Tumbler Ridge Shootings

Acting U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd says a 30-year-old Washington man has been arrested and charged with conspiracy to murder persons in a foreign country in relation to the mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. U.S. authorities say James Bryant of Bellingham, Wash., first met Tumbler Ridge shooter Jesse van Rootselaar on the now-defunct online chat platform Omegle in 2023, and went on to assist him with money, advice, and encouragement to carry out the school shooting. The attack, carried out on Feb. 10, 2026, left eight victims dead and 27 injured, along with 18-year-old Van Rootselaar, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Justice Minister to Announce Next Steps for MAID in Canada

Justice Minister Sean Fraser says the government is nearly ready to reveal its long-awaited decision on the next steps for medical assistance in dying in Canada, which is expected to address whether the procedure will be available to people who solely suffer from mental illness. A press release from the department of justice said the announcement will be made with the minister of health in Ottawa on Wednesday at noon. It will be the first time the federal government communicates the direction it plans to take on MAID in the wake of a parliamentary committee recommending in June that it should “indefinitely pause” an expansion of the end of life procedure to people with mental disorders.

Liberals Table Bill to Make Defence Investment Agency a Crown Corporation

The federal Liberal government has tabled new legislation to turn its Defence Investment Agency into a Crown corporation—a major revamp of the plan created just months ago. Bill C-40 will create an entity called the “Canadian Corporation for Defence Investment,” which will report to a new associate minister of national defence dealing with procurement. Canadian Firms Say Cybersecurity Budgets Falling Short as Attacks Grow: Survey

A new survey suggests some Canadian companies are losing confidence in their cybersecurity budgets’ ability to handle the increasingly frequent and complex threats they face. The Canadian Internet Registration Authority surveyed 503 people responsible for making cybersecurity decisions and found 76 percent represented organizations that have increased their cybersecurity budgets over the past year. Most organizations reported information technology budgets of at least $50,000, though several said they were even more well-capitalized with funding stretching beyond $100,000. However, most organizations said only five to 15 percent of those overall IT budgets were dedicated to cybersecurity. Seventeen percent thought that amount wasn’t sufficient to keep pace with the threats, sixteen percent were unsure and one percent refused to answer.
