Canada lost 68,000 jobs in September, marking a second straight month of employment losses, according to Statistics Canada. The country’s unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage points to 6.5 percent in September, the agency said in its Oct. 9 report. The rate had peaked at 6.9 percent in April before declining to 6.4 percent in July, where it remained in August. Economists had projected 9,200 jobs would be added in September. In August, employment fell by 42,000 jobs, well below expectations for a gain of 15,000 in a Reuters poll of economists and an increase of 5,000 forecast by RBC Economics. In September, employment fell by 35,000 jobs in educational services, 23,000 in health care and social assistance, and 13,000 in manufacturing. By contrast, employment in other services, which includes repair and maintenance as well as personal and household services, increased by 17,000.
