Nearly Half of Provinces, Territories Call on Ottawa to Expand Mining Tax Credit
Nearly half of Canada’s provinces and territories are calling on the federal Liberals to fulfil their election promise to expand eligibility for a mining exploration tax credit to help smaller mining companies get through their exploration phase. The Liberals’ 2025 election platform said the government would expand the range of activities eligible for mineral exploration tax credits by including the costs of engineering and feasibility studies for critical mineral projects. The Association for Mineral Exploration, which recently launched a campaign to hold the government to its promise, said it’s hoping to that included in the upcoming budget. Nova Scotia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon have all written letters in support of the campaign. Judges Must ‘Meaningfully Consider’ Indigenous Traditions When Sentencing, Supreme Court Majority Rules
The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that judges must “meaningfully consider” traditional indigenous community approaches to justice when sentencing indigenous offenders and said that not doing so can constitute a legal error. The Supreme Court judges were split on the decision, with four dissenting and five in the majority. The ruling came in the context of an appeal in the case of Harry Arthur Cope, an indigenous man convicted for severely assaulting his indigenous girlfriend in 2021, who had his five-year prison sentence reduced to three years by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in 2024. Sentencing Circles The Supreme Court upheld the reduced sentence in a 5–4 decision on Oct. 9, holding that the original sentencing judge hadn’t properly taken into account the recommendations by an indigenous sentencing circle or the mental illness of the man in issuing the sentence....
House Adopts Bill to Strengthen Magnitsky Act, Tackle Transnational Repression
A bill that aims to boost Canada’s ability to sanction foreign individuals involved in corruption and human rights abuses has passed the House of Commons. Bill C-219, entitled the Sergei Magnitsky International Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Act, was introduced in September 2025 by Conservative MP James Bezan, and passed third reading in the House on Oct. 8. It must still pass the Senate and receive royal assent before it becomes law. The bill proposes amendments to the 2017 Justice for Victims of Corrupt Foreign Officials Act (known as the Sergei Magnitsky Act), which was also championed by Bezan, as well as several other federal laws.

Canada Drops Sponsorship of Conference That Accused the US of Being a Disinformation Threat
The Canadian government pulled its sponsorship of a recent conference in Lithuania that accused the United States as a potential source of foreign disinformation. Global Affairs Canada (GAC) was one of several government bodies that withdrew sponsorship of the Disinfo2026 conference, held Oct. 7–8 in Vilnius, Lithuania, with the EU’s diplomatic service and Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry also dropping their support. GAC told The Epoch Times that it withdrew sponsorship after changes were made to the framing of a discussion on disinformation in the Arctic. “GAC had committed to moderating a panel organized by EU DisinfoLab on disinformation in the context of the Arctic. After this commitment, changes were made to the framing of several panel discussions, including the one GAC had agreed to moderate,” the department said.
